Track Of The Day :: Dead Cherry - Every Sale Is The Same

Words: Ali Mack

The bitingly sharp ‘Every Sale the Same’ is a powerful statement of intent as a debut single from Manchester's Dead Cherry.

Released last Friday through Suck It & Spin, the track is the first of three which will be released on their forthcoming 'C.R.E.E.P' EP, due in November.

Harnessing spoken word post-punk poetic influences, there's a heavy bassline that underpins a rock structure with laid over driven guitar licks that nod to the likes of QOTSA and Arctic Monkeys.

“The lyrics weren’t initially penned for music," say Dead Cherry. "I’d performed this as a skit at some open mic poetry nights, intended as a humorous critique of a lot of the obnoxious and over bearing ‘Sales’ types - think Northern ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ wannabees. There’s a bit of self reflection in there too somewhere too. Once we’d nailed the sound musically, we were struggling to pen a vocal part - that’s when we had the idea to combine some of these spoken word skits with music.”

“Step 1, Happy Hour by all accounts represents a fair saving / For the men, and women of the working class / When hidden behind a 2-4-1 offer / The aggressive mark-up of the cocktail menu / Seems to pass…”
