Introducing :: Ibeyi

Currently exciting many are new XL signings Ibeyi (pronounced ‘ee-bey-ee’).

The French-Cuban twin 19-year-old daughters - Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Díaz - of Cuban percussionist Anga Díaz (who has played with the likes of Buena Vista Social Club and Afro-Cuban All Stars), have just unveiled their Richard Russell-produced debut 'Oya'.

They sing in both English and Yoruba ('Ibeyi’ translates as ‘twins’ in the West African Yoruba language, whose music was transplanted to Cuba during the 16th-century slave trade) and with a captivating, organic style that is simplistic yet wholly compelling.

The track forms one half of the upcoming AA-sided single, 'Oya' / 'River', which is due out later this summer.

Watch the Jamie-James Medina-directed video for 'Oya' below.
