Track Of The Day :: WIVES - Buried
'Buried', the debut single from Australia's experimental garage post-punk outfit Wives, is four minutes of aural noise that will either have you leaping from the rooftop, or exclaiming it's the best thing thing you've heard all year (we're edging towards the latter) - either way, you probably won't have heard anything else quite like it recently, that's for sure.
Formerly known as Sweet Shoppe - and comprising members of TV Colours, Sex Noises, Assassins 88 and Beach Slut (Gus McGrath, also to be currently heard as California Girls) - the Canberra four-piece have released 'Buried' (on August 27 via Cinnamon Records) as their debut under the new name.
It's Anja Loughhead's (Sex Noises) eccentric vocal component to 'Buried' that leaves you wondering whether she may still be in primary school, but also works as an interesting adjunct to the drone riffs; gradually building with some nifty little touches thrown in that take you by surprise - as does the end.
Play it a few times and you'll be caterwauling along to it too.
WIVES have just finished recording their debut album, due out early next year.
Wives are: Anja Loughhead - vocals
/ guitar; Gus McGrath - bass / keys; Jordan Rodger - guitar; Tim Guthrie - drums
