Track Of The Day :: Beds In Parks - Mabel (When It Gets Dark) / Something To Do
It's not often we run a joint Track Of The Day, but on listening to both halves of this debut AA-side single release from Londoners Beds In Parks, we couldn't make up our minds which side should take the honours - so we have elected both.
Beds In Parks release their first record ‘Mabel (When It Gets Dark)’ coupled with ‘Something To Do’ via London-based label Crocodile Records on April 20. The noise fuzz duo - who also played their first live show last week - are Joanna Curwood (Big Sister, The Diddlers, The History of Apple Pie) and Finnigan Kidd (Hatcham Social, Tim Burgess, Blue Moon). After spending last summer hanging out in Hackney Downs park writing songs together and sharing a mutual love of alternative rock ‘n’ roll music like The Velvets, The Vaselines, Mary Chain, Mazzy Star and The Breeders, they eventually recorded themselves at home - the results of which are now here.
“I like you, I like you, I like you" chant Kidd and Curwood on repeat in unison as the almost seven-minute ‘Mabel (When It Gets Dark)’ opens out at the midway point. With distorted vocals, pounding floor toms, loud guitars, and ominous drone intro, it's a nicely bold kick-off starter.
‘Something To Do’ rallies the emotive qualities in the male and female vocals as they harmonise over a more low-key tempo, in a track that “is about the modern day hang-up people have of feeling they have to be sociable and talkative, or else be thought odd,” explains Curwood.
Catch Beds In Parks live at London's Shacklewell Arms on May 7, followed by the Lock Tavern All Dayer in Camden on May 10.
