Listen :: Ratboy - Sign On
19-year-old Jordan Cardy from Chelmsford, Essex, may be better known these days as Ratboy, his professional music title, to his growing legion of fans who have been following his path since first emerging last year with a five-track mixtape and its immediate and exciting attention-grabber, 'Sportswear'.
Produced by James Dring (Gorillaz), 'Sign On' is his latest track. While the comparisons to Mike Skinner/The Streets are inevitably apparent, Cardy's own edgy spark (not least his, er, 'colourful', but bleepable language) over hip-hop beats and indie guitars, strike his own distinctive chord, with rap lyrics about life pressures like how he “can’t afford the bus” and things turned during his stint working at Wetherspoons (from which he was duly sacked).
Rat Boy plays at Reading & Leeds Festivals in August, and finishes up his current tour with Circa Waves and Genaghr on Friday (April 17) at London's Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
'Sign On' is out on June 1 via Hometown Records.
