Track Of The Day :: The Danes - The Ultimate Tool
Don't be led into thinking The Danes have anything to do with Denmark and might be so named after their country of origin. In fact, this Los Angeles-based four-piece might offer a clue in their names: Dana Hobson (lead vocals), Daniel Wolf (guitar, vocals), John Mrazik (bass, vocals), Patrick Zeinali (drums) - or the first two members at least.
Influenced by a variety of genres from indie rock, through to pop, hip hop and psychedelic, the band release a new four-track EP 'You've Been Part of The Danes' this summer, prior to which they have just put out this week lead single, 'The Ultimate Tool'.
Near the four minute mark, the track is a hard-hitting one (guitarist Daniel loosely describes it thus: "Maybe it's an invitation to the religious people who are beginning to open their minds. But then again, I don't really know what I'm talking about") built around an intriguing sampled opening before Hobson's strident and aurally arresting vocal comes in, that is quasi-jazzy, rap-like, with lyrics that might include a few expletives in context. It's a track that lingers after you've heard it once as it is quite different to most you may currently hear.
See The Danes live on May 8 at Molly Malone's in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
