Track Of The Day :: Secret Company - Holding On
There's riff, and there's raff - and believe me, we hear a hell of a lot of both - and then you get a band who absolutely nails it. Come in, Secret Company.
The Chelmsford-based alt-pop four-piece, are set to release their debut EP, 'Saviour', via SO Records in June. In advance of which they have unveiled the rather good 'Holding On'. Now, apparently they "lit up the blogosphere" last year with their debut, that being the forthcoming EP title track. Hmm, must have been caught napping there as it never shone a light our way. But on the basis of 'Holding On' it certainly warrants a belated listen - which you can do here, as well as watch the band's live session recording.
But back to 'Holding On', it really is a quite a sublime four minutes, there's no denying. Everything here sounds well thought out and crafted, and put together in a polished production by James Yuill, that is icily sharp. The main point with 'Holding On' - and something many bands fail to capture in a song - is how the little inflections In its sonic palette change throughout; it's not a song that meanders along on one level, never much going anywhere, or never changing key. 'Holding On', literally keeps you holding on to see where it will go - and the last 30 seconds alone are more than worth it. Its emotive fusion of indie rock that crosses over pounding drums and Revell's undeniably heart-tugging vocals, with the electronic, allows it the space to feel capacious without going too far over the edge.
Secret Company are: Scott Revell (vocals/guitar), Kushal Gupta (bass), James Patman (guitar), Tim Reyland (drums)
