New Sounds #32 19/2/16

MARRIED TO THE SEA - COLD WAR LOVE
Title track from fourth EP by the Liverpool four-piece, out on March 11. Recorded and produced in the 'pool by Carl Brown (Wave Machines) and mixed by Grammy-winner Mark Pythian. Infectious, euphoric indie-pop. Star rating: ****/5

PITY SEX - BURDEN YOU
Ann Arbor shoegazers share a taste of their second album 'White Hot Moon', out April 29 via Run For Cover. The band describe the song as about “the burden of loving someone when it’s not convenient.” Britty Drake and Brennan Greaves intercut fuzz chords with dreamy vocals. Star rating: ***/5

TWO PEOPLE - FADING
First single (out now through Liberation Music) from ex-Snakadaktal members Phoebe Lou and Joey Clough. Percussion, guitar and synth loops play against intricate sonic arrangements and haunting vocals to give a cinematic feel. The duo's debut EP is due later this year. Star rating: ***.5/5

HOLY ESQUE - OSLO
Out as limited edition 7" now, and precedes the Glasgow outfit's debut album 'At Hope’s Ravine', released on February 26. Written as part of a trilogy of songs that "follows a prostitute, harassed and tortured until her final hour with everything left behind." Lavish, emotional widescreen orchestration. Star rating: ****.5/5

DUTCH PARTY - LOST BOY
Following their debut EP 'Astral Nights' released last year, the LA outfit deliver a helping of sun-ripened indie-pop with a thought-provoking message. Frontman Ken Franklin describes it as, "on one level an homage to Peter Pan, referring to the gang of boys who never grow up", and on another society's technology obsession: "the lost generation of today, who prefer 'likes' over lovers, and the fat cats that laugh about it." Star rating: ***/5
