New Sounds #57 May 22 2016
BEYOND RARE - SUN TURNS
Los Angeles-based experimental electronic duo - Tori Michelle (vocals) and Colton Toy (production) - are releasing a single every month this year. We featured 'Cold', April's track, now May's offering is equally compelling, with layered vocals and ice sharp production. Star rating: 4/5
THE HAZY SEAS - KITE DODGING
The Marquette, Michigan-based quartet - originally the
bedroom project of Chicagoan Alec Heredia - whom we included here last month with debut single of jangly, uplifting melodics now return with this second single. Focused lyrically on an 80s "sport kite" transformed into a game of amusement and risk". Vibrant and upbeat rhythms are juxtaposed with ominous lyrics, referencing the balance between having fun and mishap. Star rating: 3/5
ME AND THE MOON - THE LIGHT
Indie pop-folk quartet from Guildford follow up their first EP 'Run With Wolves' which came out last October with this infectious new single released this week. Tamara Grzegorzek supplies the attention-grabbing vocals. Catch live on May 24 at The Boileroom in Guildford where they play a single launch show. Star rating: 4.5/5
CREPES - HIDDEN STAR
Melbourne indie surf-pop five-piece, follow up last year's debut EP ʻCold Summersʼ with this new track of swirling synths melded with jangly guitar and echoey vocals in a dreamy take on guitar-pop. Star rating: 3/5
THE TIN PIGEONS - SPARKS
Following on from their 'Christopher' EP released last year, the East Midlands-based folk-pop four-piece (brothers George, 21, and younger sibling vocalist Fraser, 19, Norton, Thomas Quemby and Douglas Tawn) share the title track of catchy indie shimmer and layered vocal harmonies from their third EP, released last month.
