Formed last year in Wolverhampton, Lions Of Dissent are a collective whose ethos is not to be considered as a band. Seeking not to be "strangled by the claustrophobic constraints that being in a band bring... caught up in the perpetual cycles of rehearsing for gigs, then preparing to record a demo and so on. We wanted the freedom to do what we want, when we want."
Which is all well and good, but when they turn out something like 'Heaven Sent' - which really does sound like a gift from the gods - they may have to get on that treadmill at some point.
While not a single as such - "at this stage we're not calling any of our music a single or EP or stating it as an official release" - 'Heaven Sent' is the outfit's seventh self-produced song and video in 14 months, and uploaded online last week. A song about "self-destruction, defiance and recovery", it has elements of Primal Scream and the late Exit Calm, with Tim Baker providing one of those attention-grabbing voices just made for big stages that makes its presence felt over melodic guitars, driving riffs and trippy atmospherics.
Lions Of Dissent have still to bring their live show to a stage, but that could be on the cards for the near future.
"We have a lot of big plans for our live show and will hopefully have an announcement to make on that soon." Watch their space.
Lions Of Dissent are: Tim Baker - vocals, guitars, synths; Darryl Starr - bass; Rob Wear - guitars; Simon Weaver - drums, guitars, keys.
