New Sounds #76 July 20 2016

SNOW GHOSTS - VETIVER
Released on July 15 through Houndstooth as AA single (w/'Dawn'), the follow-up to 'Lied' for the dark, post-punk electronic trio. It is, explains the band's Hannah Cartwright, "about rebirth and renewal after being hurt by someone, I liken it to bursting out of a chrysalis and feeling the freedom of flight for the first time." Star rating: 4.5/5

DEAR BOY - ALLURIA
From the upcoming EP 'Parts Of A Flower' by the LA quartet produced by Doug Boehm (Girls) and out August 5 on Easy Hell. The band's Ben Grey says of the bittersweet, alt-rock track: "'Alluria' is basically a story about bad and sad. Human beings are attracted to extremes, in others and in themselves. It's very easy to fall in love with someone or something that pulls you to those places." Star rating: 4/5

SURGE - LEMONADE
Infectious, bubbly and as an refreshing as its title, and produced by Placebo guitarist, Nick Gavrilovic, the new single from the East London/East Anglia Blur-likes is out next week. Star rating: 3.5/5

SKIES - HOLD ON
Released last Friday, the new synth-led single from the Kent duo, Allie Cotter (vocals, guitar) and Jericho Tozer (keys, samples). “‘Hold On’ is a song about being mortal, and wondering why we are,” explains Cotter. Dark synth melodies interlaced with sharp guitars and Cotter’s infectious vocals. Catch live on July 23 for an unplugged set at East London’s Fringe Festival. Star rating: 3/5

TULA - ANOTHER KIND OF RED
The Berlin-based artist follows the success of last year's 'River' with this collaboration with influential Swedish producer Klas Ã…hlund (Robyn, Tove Lo, Katy Perry), from her upcoming EP. TULA explains that the alt-pop song "is about defining what is freedom for you and following this fully. The lyric is part of a letter I once wrote to my dad." Star rating: 3/5
