New Sounds #82 August 9 2016

SUNKEN - MANIC STATE OF MIND
Opening on a sample from 2001: A Space Odyssey, this is the debut single from South East London siblings Finn and Poppy Billingham, along with producer Gregor The Blue (Elliott Connor-Higgs) adding horns and drums. 16-year-old vocalist Poppy, and her guitar/bass playing brother bass wear their influences such as Jamie Isaac, King Krule, on their musical sleeve, but adapted to their own sound. Hip hop style vocals play over laid back rhythms, swooning guitars and and the horn introduction lends a jazzy feel to the mix. Star rating: ★★★★☆

CHUPA CABRA - MOUTHS TO FEED
Out on August 22 via Blak Hand Records on limited cassette, Chupa Cabra, the outfit from Deeside, North Wales, bring a catchy garage-punk beat with a fuzzy, raw pounding of guitars to this new single. Catch live at Telford's, Chester on August 19 for a launch show. Star rating: ★★★☆

DANIEL WOOLHOUSE - MAP OF THE MOON
The artist formerly known as Deptford Goth returns under his own name with a hook-laden taste of immaculate, sparse RnB, set to feature on his as-yet-untitled forthcoming album due later this year on 37 Adventures. This new material follows 'Songs' from 2014 and 2012's 'Life After Defo'. Star rating: ★★★☆

SAHARA BREEZE - UNDERCURRENTS
Cheltenham-based three-piece have just released their debut EP, from which this toir-minute-plus track is take. Mixing a zesty vibrant mix of psych-pop with a shoegaze fusion, its guitar build (some nice touches coming in the song's last minute) and vocals from Conal Kelly hint at the retro. Star rating: ★★★★☆

PSYCHIC SHAKES - KINGS
Max McLellan is a 20-year-old lo-fi pop artist from Southampton, who blends bedroom downtempo vocals with a washed out guitar sound, on this track from his just released debut EP 'Psychic' which came out on July 29 via Hail Hail Records. Star rating: ★★★☆
