'The Water' is the very impressive debut track from Brisbane three-piece Moreton. And if this is an indication of what they can do, Moreton look like they're about to take off big time.
Signed to local label Create/Control, the three girls (vocalist/guitarist Georgia Potter, drummer Myka and bassist Lee) have certainly nailed it with this striking first track, produced with Matt Redlich (Holy Holy), and recorded live with only vocal overdubs.
Vocalist Potter - known hitherto as a solo electronic neo-soul performer - brings a forlorn and dark narrative (“I walk to the water / I’m so eager to drink / but with all this weight at my feet / I’m a sure thing to sink / and it might feel good to drown") with spine-tingling Stevie Nicks-like vocals, over a minimal, layered soundscape of reverbed guitar, lightly compelling drums and undulating bass.
