Welsh alt-rockers The Joy Formidable have just released a new digital EP entitled ‘Sleep Is Day’, which features ‘Liana’ (from their current album, ‘Hitch) plus six acoustic songs.
Singer Ritzy Bryan explains that “we had some beautiful live recordings of tracks from ‘Hitch’ that we’d done acoustically, I think they were the building blocks of this EP. Then things got dangerous when we started dabbling with a few covers.”
The covers include The Misfits' 'Angelfuck' and 'Ashes To Ashes' by David Bowie.
‘LIana’ has also inspired a brand new charity project via Pledge with all profits being donated to SOS, the Sumatran Orangutan Society.
Says Ritzy, “We read a tweet by the naturalist and conservationist Bill Oddie where he was lamenting the destruction of the lianas in the orangutans’ natural habitat. Once we started reading about the crisis the orangutan was facing, it set the wheels in motion for us wanting to raise some money.” Several items are to be sold by the band, including artwork, merchandise and one of Ritzy’s Fender guitars.
The accompanying video for ‘Liana’ takes the viewer on a journey through tropical rainforests and all its inhabitants. It reminds us how we are all connected, how the “forest of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.”
