New Sounds #123 December 10 2016

BRUNETTES SHOOT BLONDES - EVERY MONDAY
New release from the Ukrainian Eurovision contenders with the song that made it to finals in the 2016 national selection. But don't rule this one out on that basis. Vocals are sultry and engaging, and when it picks up there's a poppy infectious quality to it. Star rating: ★★★☆☆

DAMA SCOUT - ALL IN TOO
The Glasgow via London garage rock three-piece belie their sharp, fuzzy deeper core with a melodic coating and light pop vocals on this follow up single - released last week - to September debut 'Forget It’s Good'. The end build is fairly kraut epic. Star rating: ★★★★☆

QTY - WORLD BREAKER
Produced by Suede's Bernard Butler, the vinyl B-side to ‘Rodeo’, the debut single from the New York duo, released December 16 through Dirty Hit. An ode to the seedier side of life in Lower Manhattan, with the shared vocal duties from Dan Lardner and Alex Niemetz providing the yin and yang. Star rating: ★★★☆☆

INDI - SHOULD'VE KNOWN BETTER
Following last year's self-titled debut EP, 21-year-old Melbourne songstress India Jade now comes back with this new single released late last month. Shimmery, pulsating electro-synthpop, with Indi lending a strikingly dominant vocal. Star rating: ★★★☆☆

MAX POPE - OPERATOR
Latest from the chilled Brighton-based singer-songwriter, with a quirky take on lyrics and melodic structure. Released late last month, the follow on from 'Rollercoaster', it is, says Pope, about "the fear of being controlled by an evil despot. It started as a horror fantasy, but has now become a frightening reality with the arrival of Mr Donald J Trump." Star rating: ★★★☆☆
