Fife fivesome Black Rays only formed last month (yes, that is January) but they're not wasting any time. Racing out the traps, they are already self-releasing their debut single ‘Glory’ today (February 19), which Little Indie is stoked to premiere.
Like most bands that sound just a tad too good to be novices, members of Black Rays (who all grew up together in Ballingry, Fife) have all played in different bands, before joining forces as The Mona Lisas for the last few years before evolving into Black Rays.
And with their new moniker they make a fine start with their post-punk, heavy-on-guitar first offering. There’s more than a hint of Nirvana in the guitar line intro to 'Glory', but it quickly evolves into something quite distinct, particularly when Kevin Murphy Jnr’s vocals kick in and the guitar effects burst into life.
"'Glory' is about being sick and tired of working 9-5, being a robot, doing the same things day in day out," guitarist Ally Galloway tells Little Indie. "The line "slave to the grave" is describing it as never getting out, working the same shitty life to cover bills without actual 'living'. The choruses state we want to get out our small town and see the world."
The accompanying video to the track captures that feeling of frustration Ally describes; working in mind-numbing and soul-destroying jobs that many bands starting out have to face, forced to put down their guitar and pick up a mop.
So impressed with what he has heard of Black Rays so far, Mike Jonns - who describes them as "amazing" - of leading UK promoters This Feeling, has grabbed the band to play what will be their debut gig on March 18 at Broadcast, Glasgow.
Supporting the much-lauded and fast-rising The Blinders (also on the bill are Shambolics and Carousel), this night will be a great opportunity to catch a wealth of new talent.
