When a band are bound together by the same influences, it can often be glaringly obvious in their lack of originality and as sonically satisfying as a tediously beige playlist sound tracking your weekly late-afternoon Sunday shop in Tesco in between several failed calls for Moira to kindly evacuate the crisp aisle and help out at checkout 5.
Luckily, Edinburgh three-piece Betty & The Bass have fused their wide range of tastes such as Johnny Cash, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Courtney Barnett and the Pixies to develop a compelling and eclectic sound that tip toes around their influences, without wiping their feet on the carpet of them.
Lyndsey Craig, Ben Wilson and Willie Conner had been playing together in different guises for the best part of three years, before settling on their unique country/grunge style and earlier this month releasing their first EP ‘Bad Magic Tricks PT.1’ under the name Betty & The Bass.
The four-track EP was recorded over the summer at Edinburgh’s Leith Recording Company. There’s a real Alison Mosshart feel to lead singer Lyndsey’s scratchy vocal delivery and this makes for a befitting accompaniment to the rough around the edges fuzzy guitar and drums at work in the background. Production-wise, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t need a polish, but this EP is a good introduction to the band and there’s more than enough on here to suggest that the band are onto something good.
Catch the band supporting Shambolics tonight (September 29) at Opium in Edinburgh.
