Sing & Tell :: La Dharma

Birmingham-based indie-pop five-piece La Dharma released their debut single 'Devil In A Tight Dress' in December, and have already caught the attention of various promoters, BBC Introducing and blogosphere with their infectious sound.

Who are you?

I'm Jake Baker, frontman and vocalist of La Dharma. Our set-up consists of Daniel Jones on guitar; Mick Madera, bass; James Morris, drums, and Chris Leedham on synth.

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today?

I started the process of putting together a band back in 2016 -which was a different line-up - under a different name. Early 2017 I called upon my childhood friend Chris, who is a superb songwriter. Not so long after that I got the rest of the lads together and La Dharma was formed!

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

Anthemic indie/pop. Jonah (Daniel Jones) loves 80s style guitar riffs, mix that together with the synth, funky bass lines, James's solid drumming and some catchy lyrics, and we like to think it creates a very atmospheric sound. Influences? I would say if The 1975 and Catfish and the Bottlemen had an 80s love child - that'd be us!

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

Kind of like one big story. We have lots of lyrics cleverly written to connect everything together. Jonah usually provides us with a catchy riff and away we go! Then we add all kinds of sounds to try and create as much atmosphere as possible and get people hooked.

Tell us a little about your latest single.

'Devil In A Tight Dress' follows the story of a lad's rollercoaster struggles with an enticing yet problematic girl. Something that most of us have experienced.

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

We have a huge show lined up in association with Scruff Of The Neck at The Victoria in Birmingham on April 14, which we are expecting to sell out. It's our biggest show yet, so it should be a great night. We have Future Fires with us too.

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

We’ve been offered more and more shows out of Birmingham now which is exciting, so we want to continue to work hard and see where it takes us!

Where can we hear more of your music?

Because this is our debut single we don’t actually have any more out on the platforms. However, we are on Spotify, and there are clips on YouTube. We do also have two singles to follow up ‘Devil In A Tight Dress’ in the pipeline for the first half of the year. We are then very excited to work on our debut EP, 'Introduction To She'.

What social media platforms can we find you on?
