Sing & Tell :: LUCIDS

LUCIDS are an up and coming alt-rock band from Grangemouth, Scotland. They released their debut single 'The Fall' on May 4 through Sound-Hub Records.

Who are you?

I'm Ian McIntyre. I play lead/rhythm guitar and lead vocals in Lucids, along with Danny MacLaren who is also lead/rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist. Our bassist is Dean Fullarton and Stuart McIntyre plays the drums!

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today?

We are all young lads from the small industrial town of Grangemouth, Scotland. Danny and I played football together from a young age and decided to start writing songs together in early 2016. After spending some time writing a load of tracks, we asked my best friend Dean (who had never played the bass guitar in his life) and my little cousin Stuart to join the band. Within 6 months of getting the band together we were playing some of the best small live music venues in Glasgow regularly. We were then lucky enough to catch the attention of Sound-Hub Records and recorded our debut single 'The Fall' with them late last year. It was released last week and the reception has been great so far!

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

We've always loved the idea of two frontmen! Right from when Danny and I started the band we've always really enjoyed using our two very different singing styles as a focal point of the band and I think people really enjoy this. It gives us such a great variety in our tracks and it helps us to be a little more flexible when we're writing. As a band we all listen to a lot of the same music - some examples are DMA's, Arctic Monkeys, Courteeners, Libertines and Kasabian. This really helps as though Danny and I write all of the tracks Dean and Stuart both give great ideas when it comes to playing the track as a full band and it can alter the style of the song completely!

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

As I've mentioned, Danny and I are the two songwriters of the band. Most tracks are actually written privately in our own time and then we pitch them to each other and bounce ideas off each other to make it sound better! I think this has always been a key to the writing process for us - hearing each other's ideas and taking them on board. It can be very hard writing a track that you're really happy with and having someone tell you parts of it should be changed completely, but it seems to work! We don't have a single track that both of us haven't had some sort of influence and I personally love that!

Tell us a little about your new single.

'The Fall' was one of the first songs written by Danny and I and it was the one the full band instantly loved the most. It was written in one sitting and the lyrics have never changed since - which we've found is pretty rare with songs that we play all the time! It always receives such great feedback at our gigs and we have played it last for every show we've ever played - so naturally it was the song we decided to release first. As far as the story it tells, we don't like to over-analyse our songs too much when people ask what they're about, we like to leave it to peoples imagination. But 'The Fall' is simply a song about someone who is struggling to walk away from a broken relationship in some way, and is still hanging on to something that isn't there!

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

At the minute we're currently lining up some shows for the summer, so we don't have any confirmed gigs as of yet but we'll definitely have a load announced soon!

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

We're planning to just keep gigging around Scotland and hopefully some more of the UK for the rest of the year and then we'll get another single out to you all later in the year!

Where can we hear more of your music?

YouTube, iTunes.
