With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
AZURA - YOURS
Brisbane's Lauren Coutts shares this three-minute electronic slow-burner ahead of her 'Mars Violet' EP, due November 2. "I was talking to a friend on the phone and realised that I was falling for him," says Azura on the ethereal vocalled dreamy track. "I wanted to be his, and I wanted him to know, but I was terrified - caught between wanting to shout it from the rooftops and bury the affection in a deep, dark place. I hung up and wrote this song."
COLOURED CLOCKS - HEY NOW
Originally the solo project of Melbourne's James Wallace, the now four-man outfit deal some psychedelic grooves and pop hooks on this infectious new single, released last Friday, taken on this track is from the album 'Raspberry Caravan'. The catchy vocal hooks combine nicely with chorused guitars, snappy snares and handclaps.
KESMAR - FEEL IT AGAIN
Co-produced with LANKS, this synth-infused debut single by Sydney musician Nathan Hawes sees him adopt a more electronic-indie pop sound with this project to his alt-folk-based previous material. "The track stemmed from a recent breakup at the time," he says, "still in the feeling of after a relationship ends you often question yourself 'will I feel it again?', basically saying will I ever feel the way I used to feel."
THE ATTICS - PASTEL BLUES
Melbourne four-piece revealed their new indie jangle last week. Following on from previous single ‘Ultramarine’, this new cut comes with bold hooks and playful arrangements. As with ‘Ultramarine’, it was recorded and mastered by Isaac Barter and co-produced with lead singer Cameron Wade. “'Pastel Blues' is the least serious thing we’ve written in years," says Wade. "It’s a playful exploration of the phrase on repeat in the chorus, 'wondering how it feels bad to be good all the time'."
P.H.F. - I WANT U 2
We first featured Auckland, NZ punk-popster Joe Locke’ back in June with 'Better Someday'. Now, after the summer release of album 'I Hate Myself', he drops this latest single. His signature vocals - reportedly recorded shortly after undergoing a dental root canal -accompany fuzzy guitar and drum machine.
BIG LEAGUE - OLYMPIC MYSTERY
Melbourne indie rock outfit led by Travis (vocals, guitar, synth) Velthoven and vocalist wife Marie Velthoven follow last year's debut album “I Thought Thunderbolt" with this first taste and lead cut off their forthcoming new record. Big sonic soundscape and determined vocals and drums drive the head-nodding melodies.
