Avalanche Party are a band that just never stop. Just this year, the band have played gigs continually up and down the country, with sets at festivals such as Tramlines, Truck and Isle Of Wight to name a few. This time with co-headliners Canshaker Pi, the tour sees them take on cities such as London, Liverpool and of course, Manchester.
Playing at no other than Jimmy’s in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, I was excited to see Avalanche Party in territory a bit further afield from where I’m used to seeing them. Being from the north east, I’ve been lucky enough to watch the band perform in multiple venues around the region over the years, but there’s always something even more exciting about seeing one of your local bands outside of your homely comforts. The venue was naturally packed to the brim with souls ready to be plummeted into the band’s hectic grasp. Any gig at Jimmy’s is destined to be sweaty, compact and personal. But an Avalanche Party gig at Jimmy’s? Sweaty, compact and personal times a billion (at least).
The Yorkshire five-piece have been dominating the scene for quite some time now, with multiple single releases under their belt including fresh single ‘Million Dollar Man’ that takes the band into musical dimensions we’ve never seen them in before. 2017 release ‘I’m So Wet’ kicked the set off to a roaring start. Jordan Bell’s repetitive chanting of ‘I’m So Wet’ was next level intense, creating the enthrallingly dark atmosphere that every Avalanche Party fan knows and loves - the vibe that has fans constantly coming back for more.
Shirtless and raring to go, Bell emitted pure power from beginning to end. Several times throughout the gig he waded through fans row after row, locking eye contact with the audience and engaging with them like no other. With a concoction of (a lot of) sweat, strobe lights and thrashing guitars, Avalanche Party were clearly in their element. After playing fan favourites such as ‘Revolution’, ‘2021’, and ‘Porcelain’ as well as new track ‘Million Dollar Man’, the band were joined on stage by Tom Haywood from The Blinders. With Jared swapping his guitar for a sax, they played Amazing Snakehead’s ‘Memories’, in memory of Dale Barclay. Jared’s harmonious sax playing combined with the raw vocals was nothing short of divine, creating a truly lovely tribute to the late frontman.
Finishing the night on classic (and my personal favourite) track, ‘Solid Gold’, the crowd went wild. I’m pretty sure a pit opened up at some point, and it’s safe to say that it left everyone involved on an all-time high. Drenched head to toe in a concoction of sweat and drink, gig-goers left the venue beaming - absolutely everything I’d expect from an Avalanche Party gig.
