With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
MDWS - CLOUDS
Released last week, Gold Coast-via-NZ electronic producer Callum Meadows returns with another slice of woozy, electro-synth R&B - his first since his 'Circles' debut of 2015. "'Clouds' is about a time I watched the sunrise alone in Gold Coast," he says of the track, taken from his debut EP due next year. "'Clouds' is about a time I watched the sun rise from my apartment balcony. As I stared at the ocean below me, I remember suddenly feeling weightless. It was as if I was sitting amongst the clouds. And for some reason, I felt completely free in that moment. I wrote this song to capture and recreate that same feeling."
FIELD OF WOLVES - YELLOW STAR
Drifting, bluesy, neo-soul near five-minute new single, released December 7, from the Sydney trio fronted by the alluring vocals of Holly Bestic. Formed on the other side of the world, in London, in 2013, this is their first release of the year after 'Back To Barcelona' in late 2017.
DEAR SEATTLE - DAYTIME TV
A quick follow on from the recent 'Maybe' by the Sydney quartet - self-described as "the melodic, singalong, beer-in-the-air, headbanging-with-heart punk rock band you’ve been waiting for" - and another to whet the appetite for their debut full-length, 'Don't Let Go, out February 15 2019. Brae Fisher (vocals and rhythm guitar) spits out the lyrics in Oz punk style.
DEATH BY DENIM - WHAT I GOT FROM YOU
Fourth and last single of the year from the prolific Perth-based four-piece, released last week. With a woozy, late night feel, according to the band it contains hints of "heartbreak, remorse and bittersweet nostalgia." The vocal is a treat. Catch live on December 8 at Froth Fest at Clancy's Fish Pub in Dunsborough.
MILK - BENZO
Auckland, NZ multi-instrumentalist Reuben Winter (aka Totems and drummer with P.H.F.) here turns his dreamy lo-fi accompanied by soaring guitar, psych-punk project offering, named after the anti-anxiety meds, and taken from his self-titled album out January 28 2019 via Prison Tapes. "We've been playing this song for a while, its basically about being alone and overthinking life decisions."
LUPA J - YOU'RE IN MY HEADPHONES
The follow up to 'Drift', the new self-produced track from Sydney artist Imogen Jones, which comes ahead of her album 'Swallow Me Whole', and showcases swelling production around intricate melodies and a commanding vocal delivery shaped in a more uptempo setting.
