With a setlist containing some of their biggest hits to date, and an eagerly - over-eager - Glaswegian crowd well up for a night of moshing and frenzy, Blossoms brought it all out for their first stopping point at the sold out Academy on their end-year tour.
As they kick off hurtling into latest record lead cut 'I Can't Stand It' and 'Unfaithful', before the singalong 'Blow' sends a gust of guitar-based exuberance through the venue, and frontman Tom Ogden starts to own the stage. It's all highly polished with a touch of indie cool.
The two-year old 'Honey Sweet' - written about Ogden's ex- - is followed by 'Cool Like You', the title track of their second album released earlier this year, and the acoustic guitar rendition of 'Love Talk', provide a midway lull, before firing back with the chiming guitars and lyrical flow of 'Blown Rose'.
The second half of the set sees a combined medley - and an masse crowd participation - of 'My Favourite Room', Babybird's 'You're Gorgeous', Wham!’s perennial 'Last Christmas' and Oasis' 'Half The World Away'. If that wasn't something to send this pumped up crowd into raptures, Ogden then channels his inner Morrissey for a fine cover of The Smiths' ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’.
After a short break, the band return with the wistful 'There’s a Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls)', before - hello, hello - bringing their triumphant set to a fitting end with breakthrough single, the effervescent ‘Charlemagne'. With the rest of the tour still to come, it might be hard for Blossoms to replicate the performance seen here tonight, but the now consummate indie rock boys you can be sure will give it all.
