The 1975

SSE Arena, Belfast

January 9 2019

Words: Izzy Butler

It's the first night of their UK and Ireland tour, and The 1975 pulled out all the stops for their Belfast audience.
Along with touring new album 'A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships', they still made sure to include a raft of old favourites like their set kick-off numbers, the eponymously titled 'The 1975' and 'Give Yourself A Try'.

The packed out Arena were treated to a staggering new stage show with stellar lighting, massive iPhones, lyrics on neon signs at the back of the stage, that provides an addition to the live debuts of ‘I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)’, ‘How To Draw/Petrichor’ and ‘I Like America & America Likes Me’.

During ‘Sincerity Is Scary’, the frontman even took to a treadmill in front of a moving New York brownstone projection, while wearing headphones and a rabbit-eared hat - as he was depicted in on the song's video.

With the crowds left whooping, hollering from the minute Matty & co. hit the stage, mobile phones went into overdrive as they tried to capture every song, every move and utterance throughout the 22 song set, which also included support act No Rome coming on to sing his own hit 'Narcissist' with the band joining in on the cover.

“I love you so much," offered Healy at one point to the - largely female - adoring throng in front of him, which naturally reduced many to swooning and sighing en masse. “You are truly beautiful people inside and out. Your support for us has been amazing and we cannot thank you enough."

The last section of the set brought out 'Girls', 'I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)', 'Love It If We Made It',
'Chocolate', 'The Sound' and a touch of 'Sex' as the final climax of the orgasmic night.
