Best new tracks Down Under #10

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

MONATOMIC - THEY'RE PLAYING MY SONG

Sydney electronic funk two-piece follow last year's 'Better Than You' and 'Pull Me In' with this new catchy number, laden with infectious synth, fuzzy bass and the poppy vocals of Steffan Lazar. "'They’re Playing My Song' is dedicated to everyone’s inner rockstar," says Lazar. "It can be challenging maintaining self-belief. Sometimes you get down on yourself; it happens to us all. Everyone who produces creative work has battled those inner demons of self-worth. Fresh off the plane in LA feeling buzzed, we wrote a song saying 'fuck this - we do believe in ourselves, we are rock stars, we don’t care what anyone else thinks, we are just going be us, do our thing, and make people dance!'"

RAAVE TAPES - STABS

Wild new single from the Newcastle dance punk trio and the first taste of their forthcoming second EP. After opening with Joab Eastley's frenzied yelp, bassist Lindsay O’Connell takes on lead vocals for the first time. “We’re aiming to convey the emotions that cloud your judgement in that anxiety-inducing moment," says Eastley. "It centres on the feeling of being exposed and how it’s possible to internalise and misinterpret the glances and proverbial ‘daggers’ that get thrown your way."

BEING JANE LANE - BE OKAY

All-female punk five-piece from Brisbane precede their debut album 'Savage Sunday' with another single of infectious driving punk after ‘Less is More’. The propulsive three-minuter is helmed by Teigan's commanding vocals that demand both joining in and no doubt some live moshing.

POOL SHOP - SHOOTING STAR

The first track from the newly expanded Brisbane dreampop-gaze project led by Jamiee Fryer, now also including Vlada Edirippulige (Major Leagues), Luke Pallier, Peter Bernoth (Holiday Party) and Dougal Morrison (Blonde Tongues). "'Shooting Star' is largely about how quickly people’s light can be extinguished, no matter how brilliantly it was burning at the time," says Fryer on the dreamy, but melodically upbeat track. "Focusing on matters surrounding depression, I meant for this song to bring forward the fleeting nature of life and death and how quickly some people’s light can be extinguished no matter how brilliantly it was burning at the time. I hope it resonates with those whose lives have been affected by depression in some way."

OUTSIDE IN - PASS ON THE FLAG

The Auckland, NZ four-piece pull together a beautiful vocal performance and delicate rhythms and harmonies in a 90s style alt-rock mix of soaring chorus and layered guitars, on this sub-five minute first single lifted from their upcoming debut album 'Karmatrain'.

100 - JUST US

Following 'Ratchet' from January, Sydney’s post-punk quartet employ producer Wade Keighran (Hockey Dad, Polish Club) on this new track of distortion and careening bass, cut with a trap-cum-hip-hop chime that vocalist Rowen Tucker spits out the cutting lyrics to. Catch live at their free entry single launch show on March 30 at Vic on the Park Hotel in Marrickville, NSW.
