Best new tracks Down Under #17

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

CITY CALM DOWN - TELEVISION

Recorded with producer Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett), the Melbourne-based band share their first new material since last year's 'Echoes In Blue'. With thumpingly, infectious melodies, the sprightly tune belies its deeper lyrical message. "‘Television’" is inspired by 1976’s Sidney Lumet-directed satire Network," the band say. "One of the greatest opportunities we have is to engage with the abundance of outstanding art that’s being produced. At the same time, there’s a lot of absolute crap, whether for television or other media, and it gets a lot more attention than it deserves. Culturally, this dulls our senses to what’s true and beautiful and we risk becoming more shallow and insular as a result."

GASPAR SANZ - MEANDERTHAL

Featuring former Tame Impala member Sam Devenport, the Sydney rockers pit a pacey rhythm with a catchy vocal, groovy chorus and fun melodies. "Everyone has their own version of reality within themselves," says Devenport. "This song is about trying to better understand what another person may be experiencing, and then trying to process it within your own reality. Ultimately it's about the dualistic nature of empathy and confusion." Catch live on May 3 at Yah Yah's in Melbourne.

TIA GOSTELOW - BLUE VELVET

Queensland songstress pulls at the heartstrings with the piano version of her affecting recent single (out now via AntiFragile), taken from her debut album 'Thick Skin'. "'Blue Velvet' is the ballad of the album and that’s exactly what I wanted it to be. This was written in my bedroom and I just wanted to write a song that musically there wasn’t a lot going on and the vocals came right through the song. The song is about an intense love and being with someone who has made you feel ways you have never felt before and all the excitement of a new relationship.” Catch live on her first European tour this May, including The Great Escape in Brighton next week.
