Words: Linn Branson
It's likely that even if you're only in your early twenties The Younglings will still make you feel old. For this four-piece from Perth, Australia are all aged between just nine and twelve.
Dom Jeffery (vocals, keys), brother Xavier Jeffery (bass, vocals), Oliver de Lestang (guitar, vocals) and Jade Arnold-Eyers (drums, violin, vocals) met at primary school two years ago, so are almost veterans now, playing shows and local battle of the bands competitions in the build-up to releasing their first EP.
The Younglings formed out of the remnants of young Jade's - young, as in then a mere 6-years-old! - 2015 all girl band, The Happy Snails. After releasing a two-track and playing one live show, they disbanded, with Jade then going on to form The Beat Babies, then in 2017 came The Happy Snails Music Academy, and subsequently the present line-up of The Younglings.
Their live set apparently includes a mix of covers and originals, and 'Mikki Moo' is one of the latter; in fact, it is the first of such. A surprisingly mature track, their indie pop-punk style is both catchy, as well as being underwritten by the constant thought of "Are they really so young?"
The Younglings will be launching their debut EP with a gig on May 4 at the Indian Ocean Hotel in Scarborough, WA.
