In our new feature, Little Indie sits one person in the guest reviewer's chair with a pair of headphones and five new tracks to swirl through their ears to give their opinion on each.
In the chair this week, Matty Aston.
Job: Music Marketing at Super Cat PR.
Musical hates: Sleaford Mods.
Musical loves: Dave Grohl and The National.
On my personal player:
Hypersonic Missiles - Sam Fender (an office favourite. Got to support your fellow Geordies)
Hello Sunshine - Bruce Springsteen (a second office favourite. The Boss can do no wrong)
CRUSHED BEAKS - SKY BURIAL
London's Crushed Beaks' second single, which was released digitally last week, and taken from their forthcoming album 'The Other Room', out August 9 on Clue Records. The album opener features squalls of feedback which slide against a looping riff which introduces the driving rhythm section, pushing forward sheets of distortion and psyched out rushes of noise pop.
Very pleased to see these guys making a return, especially on one of my favourite indie labels, Clue Records. It definitely cures my psych-rock needs.

PARIS STREET REBELS - NIGHTCRAWLER
Produced by Chris Marshall and Jonny Madden, ‘Nightcrawler’ is the fast-paced, mind bending, "ghost train ride" fourth single from the Fife band, out on July 19. A song about "facing up to the mad, bad and villainous side we all have. The part we aren’t so readily willing to show at children’s birthday parties but lands us banged up in a cell for the weekend all the same."
Bang into The Hives at the moment (Mad Cool fever), so this sounds pretty impressive. Feels very much like a festival-ready anthem so I’m all for it. Look forward to hearing more!

FRANK TURNER - SISTER ROSETTA
Produced by Catherine Marks (Foals, The Big Moon) and taken from the new album due out August 16 via Xtra Mile/Polydor, 'No Man's Land', this first single is about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, one of the most important and influential musicians in American History. On it you can hear guitar breaks lifted from Tharpe’s own back catalogue. “Which I found challenging, because she’s a way better guitar player than me,” admits Turner.
Sadly, you’ve picked the wrong person to review a track by Frank Turner. Very samey, very middle of the road - and just not doing much for me at all. Sorry Frank!

THE NAVETTES - ASLEEP
Synth-pop five-piece from Manchester bring a nostalgic, feel-good sound reminiscent of the romantic 80s synth-pop era, to this track from their debut EP ‘Beautiful, Bittersweet’ out July 15.
"This is one of our favourites to play live, we like to think of it as 'moody disco', upbeat, but dark and melancholy. [It was] inspired by a girl we encountered on a night out in Manchester. She was dancing alone in the streetlights swinging around a bottle of champagne in her hand. We wanted to write about how we thought she was feeling and were inspired by her carefree attitude."
Playful synth-pop from Manchester. Far from melancholic like they suggest! Feels like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Made In Chelsea soundtrack (which is no bad thing!). I’m digging it, keen to hear what they come up with next.

CLEARGREEN - PEOPLE
Released June 28, the new single from the Manchester indie four-piece. Hooky, infectious melodies fused with a Northern swagger and spirit, and a DMA'S vibe.
First I’ve heard of this Manchester quartet. Nothing too adventurous here: the jangly guitar play is probably the highlight. They’ll definitely have an audience, so fair play to them.
