Best new tracks Down Under #34

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

SHANGRILA - FADE AWAY

First coming to our attention a year ago with 'Temptress', taken from their 'Love and Leaving' EP, the Perth alt-rockers now return with this new release. The vibrant, emotional track is built around subtle melodies, pulsating bass and Devyn Jupp's vocal, which lyrically, says guitarist Jackson Macleod, "touches on issues that all people go through in this life, we want people to know that they are not alone and we are all on this journey together." Catch live on August 31 for a single launch show at Lucy's Love Shack in Perth.

JOAN & THE GIANTS - WOLVES

Formed earlier this year, the alt-pop band from Perth unveil their third single, released August 26, taken from their maiden EP due before the end of the year. From its delicate chime opening, guitar riffs and drums build around Grace Newton-Wordsworth's powerful, evocative voice. “This song was written at a challenging time in our lives, a time filled with toxicity and suffocating relationships. We wrote 'Wolves' as a way of healing, and as a way of freeing ourselves from this emotionally abusive place. Our main hope for this song is that it brings that same sense of healing to whoever listens to it," she says.

DOPAMINE - DECIDE

The Brisbane-based five-piece follow on from the success of their debut EP 'Outlaw' and single, 'Ordinary People', with another slice of atmospheric indie-rock, combining catchy hooks and a dreamy, DMA'S essence. "The song is about the initial feelings that you feel in a relationship," explains vocalist and guitarist Finley Miller. "As in the uncertainty of where it will go and the hesitance to put all of your trust into someone with the fear that you could get hurt. You eventually do find out that even though there is a possibility that you could get hurt, you do have to trust the other person if you love them because it's better to have tried than never to have loved at all."

SARAH YAGKI - HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT?

The Sydney-based singer-songwriter released this second single on August 16. Melding pop melodies with heartfelt lyricism, her ethereal voice soars enticingly over experimental electronic beats.

SŸDE - HER TOUCH

The Melbourne electronic duo, Will Hyde and Mitch Stephens, are back after last year's 'Follow Me'. The soulful vocal is geared to give you the feels as it ranges over a subtle arrangement of piano, soft guitar, synth and sparse percussion. "The song is about passion, feeling passion and then the sensation of not caring once you’ve lost it," they say. "We wanted to touch on the craziness of feeling love so intensely but then the flip side when you’re out of love. It’s like you completely forget the feelings you once had when you were in that relationship."

HARTLEY - USED TO

The self-produced, Mark Ralph (AlunaGeorge, Passion Pit)-mixed debut single from the Brisbane-based synth-pop artist, delivers the with her scintillating vocal, which soars over slick synths with ease. "'Used To" was a way for me to portray feelings of desire towards a person, it felt easier putting these thoughts into music rather than telling them face to face," she says.
