Play It By Ear :: The Little Indie Guest Review with... Leah Raymond

Each week Little Indie sits one person in the guest reviewer's chair with a pair of headphones and five new tracks to swirl through their ears to give their opinion on each.

In the chair this week, Leah Raymond.

Job: Contributor at Little Indie.
Musical hates: Long guitar solos.
Musical loves: Short, sharp guitar riffs.
On my personal player:
China Bears - Sunday (the track is great and the video greater!)
Liam Gallagher - Shockwave (stadium-ready chorus, swagger and Mancunian savvy - what's not to love!)

DANTEVILLES - CONFESSION

Taken from their upcoming EP 'Welcome To The Theatre', out August 30, the Manchester alt-rockers dropped this lead single last week. With soaring falsettos and driving guitars. "We wanted to express our personality through our music. This EP is us as a four piece producing music as we'd like it to sound... with the grand finale that is the boldly atmospheric and lead single 'Confession'. This is a body of music we are really proud of."

They probably are right to be proud if this is to be judged by. Rockin and melodic, it's easy on the ear while still providing enough punch.

Star rating: ★★★☆☆

CLAY - CONCRETE

Fuzzy post-punk noise from the 'Myocardial' EP, released August 1, by new Nottingham/Peterborough four-piece. Catch live at the Verve Bar in Leeds on September 27.

Never heard of CLAY, and this sounds a bit like a chip fryer! Nah, joking, but does do some serious sizzle. Like it though.

Star rating: ★★★★☆

ANNABEL ALLUM - ALTAR TO ALTER

Released last week, the latest from the
slacker-pop artist, taken from new EP 'Gravel Not The Grave', out on September 13. "'Altar to Alter' is my protest song, and I’m super proud of how it turned out”, she says. “It’s all about saying what you mean to say and standing up for what you believe in."

Surprised Annabel has not yet risen to
a higher firmament; she certainly deserves it. Hopefully this new EP will do it for her. Cracking style and power.

Star rating: ★★★★☆

THE SINGLES CLUB - GOLD FEELINGS

Lo-fi, electronic pop artist Tristan aka The Singles Club, unveiled this new track on August 3. Following last December's 'Fool For You', the Halifax-based artist has already been picked up by BBC Introducing.

This has a great summery bounce and rhythm. Can't believe he's a Yorkshire lad though; has a definite spacial Oz feel about it.
Star rating: ★★★☆☆

SEAZOO - THROW IT UP

The Welsh indies return with the first single from their second album out early 2020, the follow up to last year's debut ‘TRUNKS’, which was shortlisted for The Welsh Music Prize. Recorded at Big Jelly Studios with Mike Collins (Girl Ray, Pip Blom), the track is filled with an infectious chorus, and edgy guitar riffs. Catch live at Golden Lion, Wrexham on August 25.

Love the groove going on here; it's kinda noisy guitar-pop, but melodic too. The chorus has me bouncing!

Star rating: ★★★★☆
