Spyres take us to the 'Otherside' as they Sing & Tell on their debut release

Glasgow-based four-piece Spyres gave already captured attention with their debut single, 'Otherside', which sees them stake their claim with unrelenting indie ferocities bound by poignant lyricism and a delicate post-punk air.

Who are you?

Spyres are Emily Downie and Keira McGuire on vocals and guitar, Alex White is on drums and myself, Jude Curran, on bass.

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today

We're a pretty young band - all aged between 15-17 - and we only started gigging in April this year. Emily and Kiera were an acoustic duo for around 2 years and built themselves up, then they got me and Alex in to get things going as a full band. We're based in Glasgow but from all over. Myself and Kiera are from the east end, Emily from East Kilbride and Alex from Clydebank.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

We are heavily influenced by the current Glasgow scene as well as our favourite bands such as Wolf Alice, Courtney Barnett and The Cure.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

We've been working with Chris Marshall and Johnny Madden of 7 West Studios. They've recorded The Dunts, Gerry Cinnamon, Rascalton as well as new and upcoming bands like The Roly Mo. Kiera and Emily write their own songs but as we began recording, Johnny and Chris helped us with development and songwriting to give them that extra drive. The time and effort put into the creation of these songs is unreal because the level of skill that’s shown by Chris and Johnny.

Tell us a little about your new single - which was a Little Indie Track Of The Day last month - and, of course, the video you have just released for it.

Keira started writing ‘Otherside’ as a part of of her higher music exam - ironically based on the resentment towards school. Keira brought it to Emily who added to it with lyrical input and guitar solos. Later on in the year, we looked over the song with Johnny who helped us with the chorus and now, what you hear is 'Otherside'. As a debut single, we're over the moon with how it's come to life. The song is heavily influenced by Wolf Alice as well as the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

The video plays on the isolation and resentment that Keira started off writing about, highlighting that many may feel when in a group of people that are different to them which takes them out of their comfort zone. The punchy graphics emphasise the passion put into the song.

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

We’ve got quite a variety coming up. We are playing with these in the next months:

The Snuts in Motherwell Concert Hall, 27th of September
Thyla at Broadcast Glasgow, 11th of October
The Dunts in The Garage Glasgow, 14th of December.

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

We’ve got a new song coming your way around October/November time. We may also have a few other things up our sleeves before the end of the year...
