The White Lakes Sing & Tell on their return, 'Wolves', headline tours + more

Guildford-via-Oxford-based alt-rock four-piece The White Lakes - who met on a college music course and formed in 2017 in the city, where Little Indie caught them live at the end of that year - have just released their first new record in over a year, 'Wolves', after line-up changes.

Who are you?

I’m Matt Ellacott I sing and play guitar in the band. Kyle Oliveira plays drums, Alex Carvell-Turner is our bass player and Finlay Carson our guitarist.

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.

We came together fully at university really focusing mainly on the music we make, so at the moment we are based in Guildford.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

We would like to consider our style as indie rock, with main influences coming from Peace, Catfish and the Bottlemen and U2.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

The process normally starts with myself and Harry, our love sound engineer  locking ourselves in a room for a day, with food, of course. Once I get in the flow of writing the song normally falls into place within the space of 4-5 hours. Lyrics I like to write with the boys; I mainly wait until the day of recording before I finalise my lyrics. I focus a lot of the vocal melodies as I want it to fit perfectly with the song and the mood of the song. After that, me and the lads will get into a room and practice it, all adding little bits to make the song more “The White Lakes”, then we jump in the studio for a couple of the days in the middle of nowhere so we don’t get distracted, and finish the song!

Tell us a little about your new single.

Our new single 'Wolves' lyrically is about how people change over time without even noticing it. And that later down the line whilst being nostalgic about past experiences realise the changes they have gone through, yet it’s all open to interpretation. If other people have attached a meaning that fits the song for them. that’s cool, and I like that, and they should tell us! That’s why music is so cool, open minds creating a story behind a song for themselves. This single means a lot to us, we have been through a lineup change and this is the first new music we have released in around a year and a half. We worked on it until it was perfect and I can tell you that you don’t have to wait a year and a half for the next song.

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

Yes. Currently we are planning a tour, but sadly I can't tell you the dates yet, but this will be our first headline tour, and we couldn’t be more excited! At the moment we have a show in Portsmouth at The Wedgewood Rooms on 7th September which is a headline show for us, lots of new music will be played! And also, 19th September in Shoreditch, London at the Road trip Bar!

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

It is looking extremely promising, recording three new singles at the moment which are soon to be finished, and we are focusing on doing more shows. We are talking to some great people who are interested in helping the band grow, and we are also planning on doing as many festivals as we possibly can!

Where can we hear more of your music?

Our music is on every single platform - Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, etc.

What social media platforms can we find you on?
