Best new tracks Down Under #45
With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
VALLEY ONDA - TURTLE (feat. Chrispy)
Out now via Firestarter Distribution, the Sydney band follow follow 'Foreigner' with another four-minute-plus track of exquisite vocals, blended with understated electronic and acoustic percussion, synth and strings.
DEATH BY DENIM - DRONE
Ahead of their second EP, 'Year Long Minute', out on November 22, the Perth-based rockers haul out driving guitars and synths on this new track. "The constant polarity of guitars, synthesizers and laid-back beats set the undertone of a mind with conflicting sentiments over a broken relationship and foggy future," says guitarist Pallé Mazzulla.
KILNS - SPLIT
From their debut album, 'You Can Bet Your House', out November 22, the Melbourne indie-rock four-piece go with an infectious flow of melodies and instrumentation, coupled with vocal harmonies on this taster cut.
GHOSTGUMS - FOR NOW
Sydney five-piece emerge with their debut single. Starting out as a love song for lead singer Jamhound’s son, it quickly ripened into a tender account of the isolation he felt in his new found parenthood. After starting its life as a humble demo recorded in the Blue Mountains, the song now features production from Winston Surfshirt, and was mixed by Total Giovanni’s Matt Hadley.
SPUTNIK SWEETHEART - US GIRLS
Canberra indie-rockers follow debut single 'Home Again' with this latest jangly, guitar-laden indie-rock number, now with a video partner. The song, say the band, is inspired by "womens struggle for gender equality. It’s an issue that means a lot to all of us. We really wanted the music video to complement the lyrics without distorting the message, which took a lot of planning and storyboarding."
BAD PONY - VILLAIN
Return for the Sydney five-piece with new punchy, guitar heavy single inspired by the struggles and darkness observed by songwriter Jarred Young through life in Melbourne. “‘Villain’ is an existentialist walk down Grey St. in St. Kilda. It’s a street renowned for night walkers, homelessness and drugs. I used to go through there at 5:30am in the morning every day to get to work and encountered people with some pretty serious drug and mental health problems. The song is about those people who are too often wrongly villainised.”
