Sometimes you can quite unexpectedly hear a voice or a song that fixes you firm in its refrain right through to the last notes; due either to its charm, quirkiness, quality or style - or maybe a combination of all. It's a different thing entirely to just liking what you hear: it's a hold.
Thom Quentin Leigh is one such artist who has that ability, and has been quietly picking up praise from those who've heard him playing through local live gigs and via local BBC Radio airplay over the last couple of years, in between university studies. Now the 22-year-old Bristol-based graduate is now free to devote more time to his music, and in particular, an EP.
There are some six demo tracks - mostly recorded in one take on a dictaphone - online by singer / songwriter Thom, including 'Flurry', the delicately folkish piece which was taken up by the FatCat record label. "I got involved with them from uploading a demo ('Flurry') via their demo site last year, which they chose to feature on their site. Also through that came my publishing two songs through them."
The latest track uploaded by Thom is 'The Last Of You', which is perhaps his best work yet, where a Spanish flamenco style guitar plays under a soaring vocal range. The lyrics are often hard to decipher - seemingly a TQL signature trait - but the pitch is engaging. Another worth checking out is 'A Vivid Picture', a subtle arrangement of chimed opening and softly pitched breathy vocals.
