Following on from the bruising belter that was 'Automatic Love' back in the summer, Dundee's new-wave pop outfit Echo Machine now trade another helping of synth 'n' dancefloor disco on 'Headlights'.
Out this Friday (November 29), it comes in advance of the band's debut album, 'Instant Transmissions', arriving on February 7 2020.
Described as "a short, snappy piece of loud pop music!" it really does live up to that in every second: just over two and a half minutes of infectious discowave.
"'Headlights' started out as a dodgy demo on my iPad, and it sounded like a sleazy DFA1979 rip-off," says vocalist Gary Moore. I sent it to Mike [McFarlane, guitarist and keys] who promptly deleted all the music and rewrote everything around my original vocal track, turning it into a sort of mad 8-bit SNES synth-pop song.
"Then we went into the studio, where SAW [Scottish producer and mixer, Stephen A. Watkins] chopped out half the song, and made the bass sound like 'a motorbike trying to get off with your mum.' That is a direct quote. The resulting bastardised monster is what arrives this week! #Frankensong"
Watch out for Echo Machine next year. They've been bubbling under for awhile now, but a few festivals down south in 2020 might be perfect for them - looking at you, Vic Galloway and The Great Escape! 😉
