Best new tracks Down Under #25

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

THE DOUBLE HAPPINESS - COOCHIEMUDLO

"This one is something of a surf rock lullaby, with mid-tempo guitar licks shimmering with reverb, dual vocal harmonies that softly lap at your ears and an outro that takes you on the mainland," is how Brisbane surfgazers
The Double Happiness describe this second single from their forthcoming debut album, 'Surfgazing', out later this year. The reverbed four minutes about a small island near Brisbane, conjures up a laid back, 60s retro flavour.

THE BUOYS - LINDA

After debuting with single 'Wah', the Sydney punk-rock girls follow with this new single, ahead of second EP, 'All This Talking Gets Us No Where', out July 10 via Spunk Records. Lead singer and guitarist Zoe Catterall takes charge over the fierce arrangement of guitars and rampant percussion. "'Linda' is for anyone who’s had a shit boss," says Zoe. "After being yelled at and begrudgingly working somewhere just so I could afford rent, I wrote 'Linda' and quit."

FLOODLIGHTS - THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING

Following last year's 'Backyard' EP, Melbourne four-piece Floodlights hit the garage-rock button with jangly guitars, a harmonica solo, and heartfelt melodies on this new track - ahead of debut album 'From A View', set for release next month. The very Australian accented alternating vocals of Louis Parsons and Ashlee Kehoe tell a story of love lost. “'Thanks For Understanding' is about two lives going in different directions. It describes the complicated process of growing apart from someone, even though you still care for them,” says Parsons.

TWO ANOTHER - MY RELIGION

Smooth new R&B single from Sydney duo Two Another, Angus Campbell and Eliot Porter, following the earlier soulful 'One Night'. Taking inspiration from Frank Ocean songs ‘Pink Matter’ and ‘Super Rich Kids',this latest offering is a more downtempo, chilled affair compared to their previous tracks. Lyrically they describe it as about "how you can lean on someone so much for a sense of peace and happiness that you can forget how to create that for yourself."

STUPID RICH KID - IT'S ALRIGHT (TO BE AFRAID)

Auckland, NZ's Stupid Rich Kid dons a pop-punk mantle on the self-produced 'It's Alright (To Be Afraid)', the first single from his incoming 'Stop Me From Thinking' EP. After last year's collaborative sad-boy single 'Sparkler' with Church & AP, here a sharp vocal delivery and fuzzy background harmonies are fused with layers of guitar strums. "I like dancey music and I like sad music and I tried to find a balance of that in this, to me this song is sort of a Blink 182 / My Bloody Valentine without the ageing," he says.

E^ST - I WANNA BE HERE8

Melisa Bester, aka E^ST, is a South African-born, New South Wales residing Australian, and here she gives a taste of her upcoming debut album, 'I’m Doing It', out July 17. Produced by Jim Eliot (Halsey, Ellie Goulding), the piano-led opening leads to exhilarating beats and a dance-pop chorus, helmed by Mel's seductive vocals. “I wrote this song at a really difficult time in my life, and it’s almost like I wrote the song that I needed to hear,” she states.
