With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
DERYK - CALL YOU OUT
24-year old Madeline Bradley from Auckland, NZ shares this dark pop debut single. With a rich production by Justyn Pilbrow, Bradley's vocal makes for an intriguing glide across loping trip-hop percussion. "'Call You Out' is about the feeling you get when you’ve missed an opportunity to say something you felt you should have said or could have been said if you’d been quick enough," she says. "There’s a shame and frustration that comes with not standing up for yourself or somebody else when you could have but you just froze, lost for words. You end up brewing for a few days, plotting, questioning whether to call them out, and that exact fury is what inspired the song."
WOODES - EUPHORIA
Melbourne’s Woodes is back with new release, 'Euphoria', coming ahead of her debut album 'Crystal Ball', out October 2. Like recent single ‘Silent Disco’, she returns to delivering her intoxicating voice over shimmering synths, skittering drums, keys and added sax, for this collaboration with The Kite String Tangle.
GO DOG GO - ISOLATION
Melbourne-based four-piece Go Dog Go cover make their debut release with a cover of Joy Division's 'Isolation'. It captures a dream-pop essence that with synth and bass and racing percussion, is driven by a dance groove, as frontman Charlie Bowmaker brings a new vocal element.

The Auckland, NZ trio have shared this new track from their upcoming album, 'Clot, out via Flying Nun/Captured Tracks on September 25. 'No Ties' is a sparse, two minute piece of post punk on which singer and bassist Amanda Cheng's experiences as a Hoklo Taiwanese first-generation immigrant are touched on. “I’ve never had a personal connection with my extended family,” she said.“There’s an incomparable loneliness rooted in this - I think the weight of parental sacrifice and cultural estrangement is difficult for other Kiwis to understand.”
ROLES - TRY BEING HUMAN
The second single for 2020 from the Melbourne synth duo ROLES, Louise Love and Luis GutiƩrrez - with 'Rinpoche' coming up as a third on August 7. Combining buzzing synth bass, drum machine and guitar with Louise's warm-lit, soulful vocals, its mix of synthetic and organic are a hit mix.
WHARVES - HARD TO LET GO
The New South Wales four-piece follow their March single 'Nothing Left To Say', with new outing, 'Hard To Let Go', released last week. More downtempo, it's a catchy, indie rock jam. "We really feel we are nailing down our own unique sound with this tune," says singer Matt Collins, "and we hope our audience will love it too. We had some fun with this track and definitely did not shy away from the pop-infused elements including a blend of acoustic and 707 electronic drums inspired by INXS use of that technique on their 1987 album 'Kick'."
