If you like your sounds rough and raw with a side-long glance at possible future big time, get to grips with Eat Medical. Well, there's not a lot to get to grips with admittedly just yet, but hang in there and meanwhile check out their first offering to the internet in the form of 'Turning You'. Despite being just a demo, it seems this bunch of 20-year-old Leeds Met students (three studying music production, the other, history) are already attracting attention.
"The idea to form this band basically came from wanting to play a bunch of demo's I had recorded," says vocalist Tom Basri. "So I asked the guys if they fancied it. How did we get the name? Well, that has a fairly funny story attached to it, although it is very long-winded! In a few words, you could say it came from working for an 'Adult' chat line - but that does sound worse than it is!"
The plot thickens.
Influenced by bands like MBV, The Cribs and Pavement, their own style, according to Ben, "would be a combination of that." As for 'Turning You', "it's about this mindset I got myself into where I was pretty confused and pessimistic about things. Musically, someone called it a cross between Weezer and the Pixies which can't be too bad!"
Personally, we think 'Turning You' shows more than just a hint of Menace Beach about it; which may not be too surprising, hailing from the same area, but Tom admits to slightly more of a connection. "Ha, yeah! Well, I also play bass in Deadwall and we recorded our album with MJ, so I am aware of him and his work. I recently got really into Joanna Gruesome's 'Weird Sister', and I know he produced that too. We were really pleased with how the Deadwall album turned out, so I'm definitely a fan of MJ's work."
Look out for more from Eat Medical over the next months. "We've started playing as a band fairly recently so we're hoping to have a few more demos recorded shortly which will get put up on Soundcloud. The same goes for gigs; we are playing together regularly, so hopefully will have some sorted soon."
Eat Medical are: Tom Basri (vocals/guitar), John Churlish (guitar), John-Joe Walker (bass), Jonny Dickin (drums).
