San Francisco duo Seatraffic have announced the rather wonderful 'Man On The Coast' to be the second single from their forthcoming full-length debut 'Beauty In The Night', which is set for release on September 9.
What a track. At almost six minutes in length, it straddles foggy dreamwave and anthemic pop. It's a stadium song that is built for arms aloft singing and swaying along to.
Written during an extended stay in Seal Rock, Oregon, the inspiration for the track struck vocalist Mark Zannad while wandering on an isolated stretch of beach at dusk:
"I was standing on the 4 mile stretch of beach alone and I turned off my flashlight. As I stood there in the darkness of the beach completely isolated, an indescribable presence came over me. Something about the subtle light from the moon, the sound of the waves, and the expansiveness of the beach made me feel as though I wasn't alone at all. It felt like someone was there with me, not an actual person but some kind of supernatural feeling. 'Man on the Coast' tries to capture that feeling in the medium of a song."
Seatraffic formed in 2011 when Mark Zannad added drummer Brandon Harrison to his then fledging solo project based in San Francisco. Together the duo wrote and recorded their self-titled EP merging together synth minded, layered pop with Harrison's background in northern California hardcore.
Following the initial EP the duo began recording at Different Fur Studios with Nic Pope in 2012 and released a string of singles as well as their 'Crimes' 7". As the project began to gain momentum Zannad headed out to Seal Rock, Oregon in the summer of 2013 for 6 weeks, writing and arranging tracks that would eventually become material for 'Beauty In The Night. Returning to Different Fur Studios last autumn the duo incorporated elements of synthesiser drone, 80s post-punk and dreamy soundscapes to the new collection of tracks.
Judging by this first taste, it should be an album well worth hearing.
