Introducing :: Indra's Net

Indra's Net are a new alt indie band from Leicester. After meeting at university, the original three formed two years ago, upping member numbers to four with the arrival of bassist Luke Ingram.

"We'd all been in bands before, two of us came from a band we started at uni called Wednesday Club, and Alex was the frontman of The Blooms from Southampton," explains drummer Will Reade. "We started playing together under the name The New Official, but we felt we were forced to change by a band called The New Officials who started around the same time and were gaining attention in the US."

Trying a Google search for Indra's Net may not be too helpful when it comes to the band; most references relating to Buddhism. Is there a connection? "Indra's Net is a metaphor originating in Buddhism about a deity and the infinite net he cast. It refers to how the entire universe is interconnected, making everyone in it both insignificant and significant. Living in a city, and seeing the loneliness that modern life often brings, we felt this was a good source of inspiration for the music we were making," says Reade.

Inspired by the likes of Foals and The National, Indra's Net have just unveiled their debut single 'Summer Rain', which is the lead cut from their forthcoming EP which will be available as a digital release shortly.

"It explores the impact of positive and negative events and human reactions to both. For this track we went for a sparse and bright sound to support the imagery of a desert landscape," says Reade of 'Summer Rain', which can be streamed below. The track (which we featured in our Hot Top Ten here last week) is a four-minute piece that opens sounding not too dissimilar to the late Chapel Club, before Scurlock's raspy, raw vocals come in to take it further with a backdrop of melodic guitar workings; and, of course, balanced against the thought-provoking lyrics.

Although it is hard to judge on the basis of just one song where Indra's Net might be heading, there is enough to whet interest for the EP.

Indra's Net are: Alex Scurlock - vocals / guitar / keys, Ed Llewellin - guitar / backing vocals, Luke Ingram - bass, Will Reade - drums.
