Dry Lunch Club, a new three-piece post-punk band from London who formed earlier this year, make their debut assault on the ears and senses with a double hitter, 'We Are The Disillusioned Youth' / 'No Point'.
Digitally released on October 3, both sides will be available for free download from Soundcloud. There will also be a physical CD release on the same date which will be available from Bandcamp with two different artwork formats.
Much of how the country - and particularly the young - felt during the 80s in Thatcher's Britain - can be discerned once again, with the discontent and desire for change being felt in worndown areas and generations being suffering unemployment and a housing crisis as big and problematic as ever seen. So a band like Dry Lunch Club are, perhaps, inevitable.
Both sides of this debut, relate, as vocalist Ryan Parry explains, to the "negativity of being young and without opportunity, in a country where inequality and regression are on the rise without any signs of slowing down."
The titles of both tracks probably leave one in no doubt as to their meaning. The four-minute 'We Are The Disillusioned Youth' - perhaps the most immediate of the two sides - displays some sharp angularness, with the snappy vocals of Parry conveying its point with force and direction as he growls, "there ain't no future for me/and it makes me angry."
"It was written shortly after the London riots. I kept hearing the term 'disillusioned youth' when the riots were being discussed, but all the people putting forward their opinions on the matter seemed to be of an older generation ignorant to what it's like to be young and exploited in the current climate. I guess the song was an attempt to articulate how the 'disillusioned youth' came to be and what the motives behind them actually was," he says.
'No Point' feels like a sentiment the Sex Pistols would be espousing if they were starting out today: despondency, dejection - no point. "I think there's no real spirit of defiance within the song. It's more about the despair and the neurotic way of thinking that it becomes easy to fall into when you're working a low-paid job to survive, which holds you back from truly doing what you want because you don't have the financial backing to work for free as an intern until something comes up. There seems to be this growing acceptance that it's fair to expect young people to work low paid or unpaid jobs as interns in a world where everything is valued by capital and this release is a dig at that hypocrisy, I suppose. Oh, and the artwork is our take on the Job Centre logo. I hate that place!"
Despite the reference points and subject matter behind them, Dry Lunch Club have established themselves with a big marker point that's hard, harsh and provocative.
