Always hard to tell where a track is going to go when the vocals kick in - or even if they will do, and it ends up being a sans vocals piece after all - when you have a fairly long, and guite gripping opening. So many times one is left disappointed as the bulk of the song pales after the initial instrumental intro. In the case of Dear Desert's 'Gift Above', however, that is thankfully not the case.
We first came across the Dublin three-piece when we heard their debut track 'Give It Up' back in June - see here - and if we warmed to them with that piece of emotive pop, then 'Gift Above' ups their game even higher.
Co-produced by Darragh ‘Sacred Animals’ Nolan, the title track of their upcoming debut EP strikes home with an opening of piano chords that are gradually overlaid by layers of synths and percussion, before Brendan Millar seals the six-minute deal at just after 90 seconds in, with the kind of achingly gorgeous vocal you might want to ascend to the heavens above on.
Dear Desert play the Workman’s Club, Dublin on October 2, as part of Hard Working Class Heroes.
'Gift Above' is out on October 20.
Rating: "If there was ever a light worth fighting for/ it’s when the heart is touched." This is a song to touch both hearts and ears. 8.5/10.
