You don't probably need a language degree to work out that the near translation of 'Deux Furieuses' is 'Two Furious'. It is also the name of the female guitar / drums duo, who while seeming like perfectly amiable sorts, do possess a strong passion and anger against issues of injustice, and are outspoken in supporting causes they feel concerned about, be it raising awareness of FGM, or performing in Moscow and St Petersburg at the invitation of a group of Russian musicians who’d seen them live at the Barfly in London.
Ros (guitar / vocals) and Vas (drums / vocals) - from Glasgow and London respectively, both now London-based - formed in 2013 on what they describe as "a fucked up mission to respond with words and music to the times we are living through."
After impressing producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey), who happened to catch the band's live show during a month-long residency at London's Water Rats venue, he has produced 'Can We Talk About This?', the single which is unveiled today, and available as a free download via the Soundcloud link below.
The title of the song comes from the reported last words of Theo Van Gogh to his Muslim extremist killer in 2004. He had directed a short film called Submission, written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, about the treatment of women in Islam. The response was to cut his throat and shoot him repeatedly. A note stuck in his chest with a knife was directed at Ayaan Hirsi Ali who went into hiding.
The song was also inspired by anger over the Scottish cardinal Keith O'Brien who preached against homosexuality for years, before last year being found to have abused young priests.
"It seemed to me there were many silences that needed to be broken in the world," state Deux Furieuses.
As you might expect, 'Can We Talk About This?' is no lightweight piece of musical confectionery. Opening on a fiery onslaught of percussive drum 'n'guitar, it explodes into three-and-a-half minutes of direct, vociferous confrontation that sounds like Royal Blood for the thinking listener.
