"Ocean pop" is something that sounds not just distinctly cool and summerish, but also far removed from the more murky waters of the UK. But it's an apt description for the sound created by Tasmanian trio Heart Beach.
The three - who play what they describe as "sad, minimal Hobartian skuzz pop" - got ears on them back at the start of 2015 when they put out the hypnotically moreish drones of ‘Away’, the lead cut from their self-titled debut album released in April; the latter earning them a 4* review from our own Guardian newspaper (see here).
While they were picked up on, obviously in Australia, 'Away' may well have missed the attention of those in the Northern Hemisphere - hence our Little Indie mission to get this re-released.
The band have been around for a few years now, putting out a series of tracks which culminated with the album release. The first was the more surfy sound of double A-side single 'Holiday'/'Weather' in 2013, while the stripped back vocal drones of ‘House’ harboured on the industrial side. There is also the short, sharp ‘Record’, while the firm urgency of ‘Hours’ delivered drone beats and vocal harmonies of Jonathon McCarthy and Claire Jansen. The latest we hear from the band themselves is that they are back in the studio in November to lay down some new tracks. Stay tuned.
