Track Of The Day :: Stealing - Last Call
Words: Linn Branson
We get a fair few of the 'new' artists and 'mystery' numbers who almost always turn out to have been better known under a former name, and are far from green around the ears when it comes to music PR shenanigannery.
So it makes a nice change here to have Jake Germain here come out and inform us we may remember him from his previous band: Drive By Night. We had to think twice, given it was back in late 2013 that Little Indie covered them (you can read here), but judging by the two tracks in the post, they were not too shabby a band at all.
However, even six months is a long time in music, and in the 21 months since we featured them, the band are no longer, and Leeds-based vocalist Jake has now emerged with a new style; older, wiser, solo - under the name Stealing - and sounding by this debut single, very good indeed.
'Last Call' will be available as a free download from his Bandcamp page from September 1 - and if you love it as much as we do, you will definitely be wanting it on replay in your ears.
Recorded and mixed at home by his brother - the former guitarist with DBN, now an aspiring producer - George Germain, 'Last Call' is effortlessly smooth, from the deft electronic touches to Jake's own vocals and live guitars - changed beyond recognition from his work with DBN - and comes as the result of the last six months building his project from the ground up, focusing on "personal experiences of isolation, rapture and loss." We feel there is probably a whole other story there.
The accompanying video was also a self-made effort, drawing on new and vintage film footage to explore "themes of jealousy, anger and desire mirroring a personal life and an encompassing narrative that holds water in the same way."
We think we could be hearing a lot more of Stealing in the months ahead.
