Introducing :: Rubberneck

Words: Linn Branson

Still in their early days, South London four-piece Rubberneck are making a concentrated pitch in 2016.

The Clapham/Brixton-based grunge/alt-rock band - all just 18-years-old - started off jamming two years ago while still at school "playing Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pixies covers in a dingy room off Regent Street where you could jam for four hours for little more than a tenner."

Putting things on a firmer footing last summer, they embarked on working on material for their first EP, which they eventually recorded at Brixton Hill Studios in two days. The five-track debut was released just before Christmas.

Vocalist and songwriter Joe Reeves attributes the likes of 90s Britpop as well as the US grunge scene as being influences. "Also, neo-psych such as Pond, Tame Impala and Gum have influenced me massively in my songwriting. Lyrically, I personify emotions and situations as people, and each song carries a lot of meaning to me personally. I like letting people interpret them how they want," he says.

Check out a couple of our favourite Rubberneck tracks here, and you can catch them live at Camden's Dublin Castle on January 16.

Rubberneck are: Joe Reeves - vocals/guitar, Nick Moore - guitar, Seb Turner - bass, Daniel Gowers - drums
