New Sounds #22 7/1/16

JAILL - PAINT ME SCARY
Wisconsin psych-pop three-piece follow 'Got An F' and 'Getaway' from the Burger Records LP 'Brain Cream', with a cassette release titled 'Wherever It Be', out via JEFF The Brotherhood’s Infinity Cat Records on January 8. Vocals from Vincent Kircher and hazy guitars combine to create a psych-surf sound with warped guitar layering, soft keys, and sparing drum patterns. Star rating: ***/5

PUBLIC MEMORY - RINGLEADER
Second single cut - out as of now - of pulsing drones and propulsive beats from producer Robert Toher's (of Brooklyn-based electronic outfit ERAAS) solo project. Taken from the debut album 'Wuthering Drum', released on March 18 via Felte. Star rating: ****/5

WEST OF THE SUN - SIBERIAN HYSTERIA
First single to be taken from the debut album - released January 29 - from London-by-way-of-Derbyshire indie rock five-piece. Britrock 'n' baroque pop with frontman Luke Ward coming over like a psyched-out Liam Gallagher. Debut album set for release this spring. Star rating: ****.5/5

OUR GIRL - SLEEPER
Debut - released last month - as a AA single (w/'Level') from Brighton-based trio (Soph Nathan of The Big Moon, Josh Tyler, Lauren Wilson). Dark and shimmering reverbed fuzz pop. Star rating: ***.5/5

LONTALIUS - KICK IN THE HEAD
18-year-old Eddie Johnston from Wellington, New Zealand turns lo-fi/shoegaze bedroom works into melodic, layered works. This new single was recorded with Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, Youth Lagoon, PJ Harvey) in Bristol and is out now via Partisan Records. Eddie's debut album will be released this year. Star rating: ***/5
