September 2 2016 - Hot Top Ten

TRACK OF THE WEEK
DEN - POLTERGEIST
The Sydney four-piece post-punks share newly signed to indie label Rice Is Nice, and this first single is an opener to their self-titled debut EP out on November 11. Like Joy Division crossed with Eagulls - but with different accents. The vocals here by Michael Grossman affectingly deep and resonant, with layered reverbed effects over a brooding, doom-driven bassline. Urgent, menacing and quite wonderful.

MANNEQUIN DEATH SQUAD - KYMS
More Oz delights, this time from Melbourne's scuzz-punk duos (El - vocals, guitar, drums and Dan - guitar, vocals, drums) who sound like a raucous four-piece. This new single, out on September 23 via Integrity Records, precedes their debut mini-album 'Regurgitate’. On tour in the UK this month, kicking off at London's Old Blue Last on September 12.

FJORD - I GET IT NOW
Released in advance of the Canadian duo's - Thomas Casault
and Louis-Étienne Santais, who hail from the Montcalm area of French-speaking Quebec - debut album, 'Textures', out on September 16. This is the latest in a succession of superb alt-pop electro tracks from the pair, and just maybe their best yet.

COLOUR OF SPRING - SNOW
Produced by Alex Greaves (The Orielles, TRASH, Allusondrugs), Leeds shoegaze four-piece release this new track of swirly guitar and synth via York-based label Swirly Records on cassette tape. On tour September/October, catch next live at Glasgow's Shadow Sound on September 7, followed by a launch party on September 9 at The Old Red Bus Station in Leeds with PLAZA and Party Hardly.

THE AMAZONS - IN MY MIND
The Reading quartet pull out the big anthem sound in this new single from their forthcoming  debut album. Produced by Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice, Foals, The Vaccines), this is thrusting guitar-rock and Matt Thompson the singer to watch. A band looking like they are on their way. On tour next month, catch live at London's Oslo on October 13.

HWYS - BEACHES
Title track from the Canadian electro pop duo from Montreal, Simon Perrotte and Guillaume Fecteau's debut EP released last week. Lo-fi analog synths and catchy melodies.

IS BLISS - OCEAN BLUE
Is this bliss? Oh, definitely. Hampshire shoegaze/psych fusion in the manner of Exit Calm, produced by Pat Collier and taken from upcoming EP 'Velvet Dreams', out October 21 via Club AC30.

BABY QUEENS - TIRED OF LOVE
Cardiff all-women quintet blend R&B, soul, electro-pop and great voices and harmonies. Released September 9 via Strangetown Records. Baby Queens’ debut album is out on October 28.

SHAKES - STRANGE TIDES
This was a Little Indie Track Of The Day back in July, but as the EP from which it is from has just been released (on August 23), the Mount Maunganui, New Zealand quartet's moreish watered-down, disco psych sounding track gets another airing. And why not.

ALPINES - HEAVEN
Released last month, the second single from Kingston (Surrey) synthpop duo. Sultry beats back soulful R&B electronic grooves. From their 'Another River' album. due October 28 on Metropolis Music.
