New Sounds #91 September 1 2016
WORST PLACE - THE SUN CHANGED EVERYTHING
London alt-pop quartet combine a hazy mix of indie-rock and psych on this new track, with mellifluous guitars, catchy beat and soothing vocals. Catch live at Walthamstow's Crash Festival in London on September 3, and at Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney on September 10. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
CATHOLIC ACTION - RITA ORA
Glaswegian rockers storm back with a new double A-side single (w/’Breakfast’), released on 7” vinyl and download on September 23 via Luv Luv Luv Records. Old Reet acts as the muse for this burst of glam, hand-clappping post-punk. On tour in September, catch live on 3rd at Lodestar Festival, and the 6th at the Liquid Rooms, Edinburgh (w/ Teenage Fanclub). Star rating: ★★★☆☆
NAUGHTY CORNER - MIND TO THINK
Manchester-based three-piece fusing funk, soul and reggae on this debut track. Vocalist/ guitarist Patrick Legard provides some gritty indie vocals - and a touch of melodica. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
JACK ELLIS - DISDAINED
The Welsh multi-instrumentalist returns with this latest single, released September 23 via District South Records. A stripped back, slow builder of a song that is carried by Jack’s distinctively gritty and impassioned voice. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
