New Sounds #115 November 16 2016
SMALL VICTORIES - PAINT THE PICTURE
Second single from the London alt-rock duo, Nick Thomas and Andy Faulkner, released November 4. Small by name, but building big on
grunge infused rock riffs, with a heavy bass carrying it along on a foot-tapping beat. Star rating: ★★★☆☆
PLUM - GREY
Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Plum - aka Caleb Jacobs (Juliawhy? / The Cathys) - released this new track last week via Turktown Records. Shiny synths, soaring guitars and drum machine permeate a woozy dreampop landscape. “'Grey' is about that moment when you have a brain fade, your mind freezes, the cat’s got your tongue and your only choice is to wait for it to pass.” Star rating: ★★★☆☆
PARIS YOUTH FOUNDATION - LOSING YOUR LOVE
Debut single (released as a limited 7” single on December 2 via Crosstown Recordings and available digitally now) from the Liverpool based five-piece. Infectious, earworm melodies with frontman Kevin Potter’s injecting melodic and heartfelt vocal over jangly, reverb-drenched guitars. Catch live for first headline show at Liverpool’s Buyers Club on December 2. Star rating: ★★★★☆
LUXURY DEATH - PAINKILLER
Following the scuzzy dreampop 'Radiator Face', the Manchester duo - ex-Nai Harvest's Ben Thompson (guitar/vocals) and Meg Williams (keys/vocals) - provide another balm of breezy rhythms and melancholic melodies mixed through a whirl of distortion, released as part of Art Is Hard Records' Pin Club. Star rating: ★★☆☆☆
WILDHEART - IS IT POSSIBLE
Out last week, the new single from the Swedish trio and taken from their just released debut album 'Shine'. Utilising a synth component to their electronically warped alt-pop, with singer Ylva Holmdahl asking the deep question:"is it possible to feel connected to something unreal?". Star rating: ★★☆☆☆
